2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE580 Road Trip Test: The Hybrid V8 SUV That Surprises Everyone

With a powerful hybrid V8 setup and an upscale driving experience, the Mercedes GLE580 stands out as one of the strongest luxury SUV contenders, though it isn’t entirely free of drawbacks.

The GLE580 uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. While the gas engine does nearly all the work, the hybrid motor adds 184 lb-ft of instant torque, dramatically improving low-speed response. Its integrated starter-generator can provide torque even during gear shifts, eliminating shift lag altogether. No matter what the 9-speed transmission is doing, the GLE responds instantly to throttle input. After later driving a Nissan Armada on the same roads, the difference was striking—the Mercedes was always ready, never caught between gears.

Michigan’s slow-moving trucks and unpredictable drivers highlighted one of the GLE’s biggest strengths: effortless passing power. Whenever a gap opened, the SUV surged forward with complete confidence. It didn’t just have enough power; it delivered that power at the exact moment you needed it.

However, the GLE580 has one major annoyance—its capacitive steering-wheel controls. These touch-sensitive buttons often misread swipes and taps, especially when adjusting cruise control in 1-mph increments. Despite years of refinement, this system still feels unreliable compared to traditional physical buttons, and on long drives, it becomes genuinely frustrating.

Beyond that flaw, the GLE excelled in every way during our 800-mile journey. The cargo area easily held four suitcases, and rear passengers consistently praised the comfort, visibility, and quiet ride. This level of refinement is possible because of the GLE’s high price ceiling, allowing Mercedes to perfect the little details that elevate the driving experience.

With 510 hp, 538 lb-ft of torque, and a 0–60 time of 4.3 seconds, the 2026 GLE580 is more than just numbers—it’s a luxury SUV that performs flawlessly in real-world use.
